Unifits

From Google Cloud to Nine Kubernetes Engine

Nine contributed consulting and implementation services as well as support to this project. The customer felt that all necessary tasks were implemented promptly and competently. The switch from a traditional server architecture to NKE went smoothly and now enables Unifits to operate securely, while benefitting from substantially lower maintenance costs.

The Challenge

Unifits had been operating an in-house application for a renown Swiss bank on physical and virtual servers managed by Nine for several years. However, as the operating system was slowly approaching its EOL date, the servers needed to be replaced or modernised. Unifits also saw optimisation potential in the area of software provision and delivery, as well as in the maintenance of required software packages such as Java. The bank demanded that the highest security standards be met and that any data must be stored within Switzerland. Traditional cloud providers such as Google, AWS or Azure were therefore out of question.

The Solution

After only a few kick-off calls about requirements, consultations with Nine experts and regular alignments, Unifits swiftly decided to go for Nine Managed Kubernetes Engine (NKE). Nine’s expertise and flexibility enabled Unifits to quickly implement a proof of concept, set up a test system and finally, to migrate their production environment to the new platform. As part of the project, database client certificates were introduced, which additionally strengthened data security to the desired level.

The Result

The new NKE platform enables Unifits to add flexibility to their application and to scale it easily when needed. In addition, the GitOps approach means that configuration changes require far less effort and can be tracked in their entirety, thus reducing workload and saving costs. Installing new versions is easier, as the deployment of custom programmes is now fully automated. In addition, Unifits can check the status of their application more quickly and easily and view any anonymised logs. Without cyclical operating system changes on physical and virtual servers, testing and migration efforts in this area are eliminated, which leads to further savings.

«I would like to thank the whole Nine team. Their support during the migration was excellent. Thanks to their flexibility, we were able to complete the PROD deployment in a very short time.»
